Holiday without wildfire risk: where is it still possible?

Images of burning Mediterranean coasts make some travellers hesitant. Which European destinations have negligible fire risk — and what other risk do you get in return?

Anyone who has seen the summer fires in Southern Europe in the news sometimes asks a simple question: is there also a holiday without fire risk? The answer is yes — but with an honest caveat: what you save on fire risk, you often get back in another danger. Here are the destinations with negligible wildfire risk.

The Alps

Austria, Switzerland and southern Germany have some of Europe's lowest fire ratings. It is cool and green, and continuous flammable forest under extreme drought is rare.

What you get in return: mountain storms and flooding. Plan mountain hikes in the morning and keep an eye on storm risk.

Lake Garda & Northern Italy

Around Lake Garda and in the Po Valley, wildfire is barely an issue. It is green, water-rich and densely populated.

What you get in return: this is one of Europe's hail and thunderstorm hotspots. Park your car under cover if storms are forecast.

The Danube and Central Europe

Along the Danube through Bavaria, Czechia and Hungary — ideal for cycling and river cruise holidays — fire risk is minimal.

What you get in return: river flooding, with September as the most vulnerable month. Book with flexible terms.

Scandinavia & the Baltic Coast

The north has the lowest natural risk in all of Europe (total risk around 16%). For those seeking maximum peace of mind, this is the safest choice available.

The caveat: 'low' is not 'zero'. In hot, dry summers, fires occur here too (Sweden 2018) — but the chance is small.

The honest overview

  • Want to avoid fire above all? The Alps, Northern Italy, the Danube countries and Scandinavia are your best bets.
  • Expect a different risk profile: instead of fire you get storms, hail or flooding — usually more predictable and rarely life-threatening, but something to plan for.
  • Also a warm option: the Canary Islands combine low coastal fire risk with a mild, stable climate.

In short

A holiday with negligible fire risk is entirely possible — in the Alps, Northern Italy, the Danube region or Scandinavia. Just keep in mind that you will get another risk in return, usually water or storms. Check the current situation for your destination in the atlas shortly before departure.
