Coolcation: Europe's coolest holiday destinations

More and more travellers are deliberately heading to cooler, more stable destinations. Which places in Europe combine pleasant summer weather with low natural risk — and what's the catch?

The 'coolcation' is no longer a hype but a lasting shift. After a series of summers marked by heatwaves, evacuations and 40-plus temperatures in the south, more and more people are consciously choosing cooler and more stable destinations. Denmark had a record tourism year in 2024, and domestic staycations grew from 30% to 37%.

But which destinations are truly cool and low-risk? Here are the strongest options from our atlas.

Scandinavia & the Baltic coast

Europe's safest summer climate, with an overall risk of around 16%. Pleasant temperatures, long light evenings and impressive nature.

The catch: low is not zero. The heatwave of July 2025 reached Scandinavia, and Sweden experienced major forest fires in 2018. The trend of heat and fire moving northward is real.

If you're looking for peace, space and coolness, you're in good hands here. Just don't expect tropical swimming temperatures.

The Alps

Austria, Switzerland and southern Germany offer a future-proof summer climate: pleasantly warm during the day, cool at night, and no significant forest fire or heat stress.

The real risk factor here is mountain storms, not heat. Heavy downpours can strike suddenly and lead to mudslides — the September storm Boris (2024) caused flooding as far as Austria. In practical terms, that means: plan hut and mountain hikes in the morning and check the storm risk daily. If you do that, the Alps are one of the safest and most beautiful summer destinations.

Canary Islands

An outlier: warm, but climatologically very stable. Thanks to the trade winds, temperatures stay around 22–28 °C year-round — never the stifling 45 °C of mainland Spain.

The heat risk is therefore low while you still have guaranteed sunshine. Be aware of two local phenomena: the calima (Saharan dust that temporarily worsens air quality, especially in winter and spring) and the volcanic nature of the islands. The latter is excellently monitored; the eruption on La Palma in 2021 occurred without fatalities thanks to timely evacuation.

The seasonal strategy: cool travel without going far

You don't necessarily have to head north. The same Mediterranean destination is a fraction as hot and crowded outside July and August:

  • Northern Spain (Basque Country, Asturias): Atlantic climate, 24–28 °C, sea breeze.
  • Algarve: moderated by the ocean, much more stable than inland Portugal.
  • Ireland, Scotland, Brittany: virtually no fire or heat risk. Changeable weather is the price here — but no natural disaster that will derail your holiday.

In short

A coolcation doesn't have to be a compromise. Scandinavia and the Alps offer coolness with low risk, the Canary Islands offer warmth without extreme heat, and smart seasonal timing makes even classic southern destinations pleasant again. In all cases: low risk is not zero, so check the current situation here too before you book.
